With a circumference of approximately 16 km, this small island can be circled in half a day by bicycle or in about three hours by renting a bike. The island is surrounded by emerald green sea and coral reefs, and is famous for being the setting of an NHK TV drama series. At the center of the island is a 99-meter-high peak, Datake, from the top of which you can enjoy a panoramic view of the Yaeyama Islands.

Sightseeing Spots 4. Sugar Road

A photo spot where sugar cane fields stretch for about 1 km.

It is also known as a location for the drama "Churasan," and is popular for touring by bicycle along a straight stretch of road. In Churasan, this road was used as a route for Erii and Fumiya to go to school.

Along with Sugar Road, we would like to visit Kohagura-so, which was used as the birthplace of "Churasan". The signboards and other parts of the house remain as they were when the filming took place. It is a popular tourist spot. However, the site is a private house and cannot be visited.

Sightseeing Spots 6. Kaijin Park

A grass park located in Hosozaki at the west end of the island. The manta observatory is 6m high and offers a panoramic view of Iriomote Island.

Sightseeing Spots 7. Ishinagata Beach

Mangrove trees are said to have washed ashore from Iriomote Island. Here, seawater and freshwater mix, and a variety of creatures can be seen.

Sightseeing Spots 10. Kayama Island

Kayama Island is a 10-minute boat ride from Kohama Island. It is an uninhabited island with a circumference of about 2.5 km and is home to an estimated 1,000 rabbits.

On the beach, you can snorkel, observe tropical fish, and see hermit crabs, which are a national natural treasure. BBQ is also available on the tour. This place is only accessible to tour participants, so why not go on a sightseeing tour?

Stone at the entrance of Sugar Road Sugar Road starts here. It is the road seen in the TV drama! Needless to say, you will be excited.

Twelve holes are dug on its surface to indicate directions. In the old days, people used to rely on the "mulubushi" (group stars) to determine when to plant crops by placing a pole in these holes.

Sightseeing Spots 18. Hamashima Island

An uninhabited island about 10 minutes by boat from Kohama Island, surrounded by the sea with a 360-degree panoramic view.

It is also known for changing its shape depending on the time of day, and has been filmed by various media.

You can go there from Ishigaki Island, but it takes 30 minutes from Ishigaki, so people with seasickness or small children often take a tour from Kohama Island. It is also famous as a sunset spot.

Sightseeing Spots 19. Barras Island

The island is located between Iriomote Island and Hatoma Island and is formed by white coral deposits. The island gradually becomes smaller when the weather is fine, and larger after a typhoon or other stormy weather.

It is also a popular snorkeling spot, where you can admire eda corals and clown fish. It can only be reached by tour, so be sure to join a tour and enjoy this miraculous island.
