Nurtured by the pleasant sunlight that only a tropical paradise can provide, hibiscus and other colorful flowers are in full bloom all year round, and the spectacular scenery attracts visitors from first-time visitors to repeat visitors.

In addition to the relaxing resort atmosphere, you will be greeted by wild animals such as Indian peacocks, buffaloes, goats, and rabbits. Take a walk around the island of Kohama and feel nature with all your senses!

    Kohama Island Walking Attractions

Tour to feel the nature of Kohama Island

On the Kohama Island walking tour, you will visit "mangrove forests," "a hill with a spectacular view," "beaches," and more.We will take you to not only famous tourist spots but also to secret spots that are not listed in guidebooks but are known only to local guides. Kohama Island still retains the traditional lifestyle and streets of the Ryukyuan people, which cannot be experienced on the main island of Okinawa, which is becoming more and more urbanized with the arrival of many tourists. On this small island of about 600 people, sugar cane fields with fresh breezes blowing through them, and shisa statues perched atop red-tiled roofs can be seen everywhere in town. Take a walk around the island and enjoy a taste of the Ryukyuan resort island of Kohama. We will take you to a place of extreme relaxation!

    Explore the magnificent, untouched mangroves

The first highlight of the Kohama Island walking tour is the mangrove forest! The mangrove forest of Kohama Island is called "Galapagos of the East." It is not as large as Iriomote Island, the largest island in the Yaeyama Islands, but the pristine and natural mangrove forest spreads in a compact area and is easy to walk through. The mangrove forests in the subtropical climate of the Yaeyama Islands are not large in size, but you can feel the strength of their life force. The green of the trees is overwhelmingly "super green," darker than the plants we usually see.In the surrounding area, you can observe the unique flora and fauna of the Yaeyama Islands. You can feel the power of nature in the mangrove forest even in a short time.

Bikei Beach filled with pure white sand

Kohama Island has several beautiful white sand beaches that are frequently used for commercials and various media shootings. In particular, the beach near the village of Hosozaki offers a spectacular view of Yonara Channel and Iriomote Island in the front, and Kuroshima and Aragusuku Island in the distance, making it not only a beautiful beach but also a spectacular view. With few tourists, it is a spot where you can enjoy a relaxing resort atmosphere.

Why are Kohama Island walking tours so popular?

Go to the spot where you can enjoy the No. 1 view of Kohama Island

Kohama Island is a small island with a circumference of only 16 km, but because of this, its tourist attractions and points of interest are compactly organized. The best view of Kohama Island can be seen from "Ubudaki".

The altitude is not that great, at about 99 meters, and the peak is more like a hill than a mountain, but the view from the top is Kohama Island's No. 1 spectacular. The view of Kohama Island can be seen from the top, and the emerald green sea surrounding the island, known as "Kohama blue," and the remote islands of Yaeyama, including Iriomote Island, can be seen in the distance. The unobstructed 360-degree panoramic view is very popular as a photo spot, so be sure to take some great pictures!

Anyone can participate in the Kohama Island walking tour!

The Kohama Island walking tour is open to everyone from families with small babies to the elderly, and the best course is decided according to the weather of the day and the wishes and circumstances of the participants, so that anyone, young or old, can join the tour.

In the case of sightseeing tours, most of them are conducted in large groups in large buses, etc,Since most tours are conducted in small groups, families can feel free to make requests in case they become ill or something happens to them.

Enjoy the relaxing time that only a resort can offer!

Take a leisurely stroll around the island, looking at the "Kohama blue" sea, which you will never get tired of no matter how many times you see it, as if you are capturing the memories of your trip. I wasn’t confident in my stamina and was worried about whether I could hike through a subtropical forest, but since it was a small group and the guide adjusted the pace to suit us, it wasn’t a problem at all. The guide took us to secluded spots that are usually off-limits to the public, and I was thrilled to see rare wildlife up close. It’s a wonderful tour that lets you easily experience an adventure in the great outdoors, so even beginners can fully enjoy it.

Since we had the boat all to ourselves in the afternoon, we were able to relax at the hotel in the morning, which made for a very efficient itinerary. We were able to enjoy the ocean as a family, and I felt it was a great value for the money. However, the shaded area on the boat was a bit small, so I think it’s best to make sure you’re well-prepared with sunscreen and other sun protection measures.

For our anniversary trip with my wife, we took the plunge and booked a private boat charter. We were able to request only the spots we wanted to visit, and spending that luxurious time just the two of us without worrying about anyone else was an absolutely wonderful memory. We thoroughly enjoyed a leisurely time gazing out at the beautiful ocean off Kohama Island, and we’re also grateful for the staff’s thoughtful attention to detail.

First, we received a briefing from our guide at the entrance to the mangrove forest, and then we ventured deeper into the woods. We were able to take our time observing rare plants and creatures, such as crabs, that you don’t usually see in everyday life, making it a truly fascinating experience. The guide was very knowledgeable, and we were able to feel the power of nature firsthand. I think this is a wonderful tour that people of all ages can enjoy.

I used this as a charter plan that allowed me to join in the afternoon. Since it’s a private charter, it offers a lot of freedom, but the facilities felt a bit dated. I enjoyed my time out on the water, but it wasn’t particularly memorable; I’d say it was worth the price.

The sunset we saw after landing on the “Phantom Island” was absolutely stunning, and we had a truly fulfilling time. There are no age restrictions, and you can participate without bringing anything, so it’s very convenient. If I had to mention one thing, the footing was a bit unstable when boarding and disembarking the boat, so I felt it would have been helpful if there had been a bit more advance warning about that.
